General procedure: A mixture of isatins 1c, e-g (1 mmoL) with an equimolar amount of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole6 (0.15 gm, 1 mmoL) and bromoacetic acid 3 (0.14 g, 1 mmoL) in glacial acetic acid (10 mL) in thepresence of sodium acetate (0.16 g, 2 mmoL), was heated under reflux for 2 h.
