The ethyl acetate phase was separated, washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered, and evaporated. The residue was recrystallized twice from acetone-hexane and then from aqueous methanol to give 3.4 g (29% yield) of the phthalimide (5) as fine yellow crystals, m.p. 157 C.
