General procedure: A mixture of isatin 1 (1.0 mmol), malononitrile or cyanoacetic ester 2 (1.0 mmol), phthalhydrazide (1.0 mmol), and NiCl2 (0.2 mmol) in PEG 600 (5 mL) was stirred at 100 C for the appropriate time (refPreviewPlaceHolderTable 2).
